Darren Hayman's personal guide to the old classic Cafés of Great Britain. (with a heavy bias towards London and the South East).

16 Blackhorse Lane, London E17 6HJ

This is the Café that features in the song Table for One, on the album Table for One. The caff where I spend most of my time. The place has been in the same family for at least 4 generations. The dominant characters there at present are two sisters with 40's hair dos. I haven't learnt their names yet, I don't like to be one of those over familiar regulars, but I bet one's called Maria. They have a knack for being so over enthusiastic about everything. I went in once and one of them had just been pick pocketed on Walthamstow market; "They were SO good you know, I didn't feel a thing!" as though she were recommending them to future victims.

The Café itself is just so beautiful. The front room retains its 1950's fixtures and fittings, but the back room is a green and white tiled 1940's Pie and Mash shop style room.
