Darren Hayman's personal guide to the old classic Cafés of Great Britain. (with a heavy bias towards London and the South East).

Victoria Parade Broadstairs Kent C10 1QS
A beautiful pink blancmange of a cafe. Well I say cafe but really the forte of this particular establishment is really ice cream and cake. Big towering knicker bocker glorys and gateau's shooting their load all over their dinky little plates. I know seem to be just filling each of these pages with superlatives but this place really is unique. The main feature, that you can hopefully deduce from these photos is the incredible ceiling fittings. I find it amazing that small independent businesses would put so much though, effort and expense into something which has the sole purpose of design and looking good.
The other funny thing about finding these places that are in smaller towns a way out of London is how the locals just go about their usual ice-cream buying business in 50's wonderland why us city folks stand there slack jawed staring at the ceiling. There was nobody under sixty in Morelli's, but then I'm not sure if there's anyone under sixty in Broadstairs at all. Its a great place though, Charles Dickens thought so, he had a holiday home there.
