Back to the Stereo Morphonium

Joel was one of the first people I met, when I started playing shows in London way back in 1995. He was very kind to me and taught me a few things about how to get gigs and how the industry worked. He also introduced me to Simon Aldous who put out the first two Hefner singles, so you could say that without Joel there would be no Hefner. Pretty early on our relationship was defined by constant arguments about sound fidelity.
"Your album sounds like shit!"
"What do you know, you over produced fuck!"
"You've got no dick!"
That sort of thing. Joel moved to New York and then in 2001 he came back to London and we decided to form a synth band. Things hadn't changed much.
"That drum sound sucks, arsehole!"
"You play keyboards like Ray Ray Manzarek, what would you know!"
"Jesus, your ugly!"
We did two gigs, half recorded a bunch of songs, and then Joel went back to New York. Recently however Filthy Little Angels showed an interest in the project and me and Joel decided the least we could do was finish the thing off. We wrote two new songs and souped up the old ones. The only way to finish the record in the end, without killing each other was to let Joel, produce and mix it, and I must admit he did a better job then I could have done.
I like making music with Joel, he pushes me to consider methods I wouldn't usually use and does drag different things out of me. But I've got be honest, sticking my head in an oven sometimes seems like a better option. - Darren 2005
