Pull yourself together
You should pull up your socks girl,
You should be calling in the favours,
You should be putting the hours,
You should pull your self together.
There's a limp to my walk,
I speak wisdom when I talk,
And I will ride you up to heaven,
If you pull yourself together.
And all you favourite authors,
That wrote all your favourite books,
Which had all your favourite words,
They do nothing for you now.
You should be lying on your back,
With a glow in your heart,
And I will ride you up to heaven,
If you pull yourself together
Christ
I didn't love her quite enough so she left,
I once had her sweet sincerity, yes I'm bereft,
And when did she obtain that wandering eye,
Oh Christ, won't you take my hand and be there when I'm waking,
Oh Christ, She's not with me now, so grant me with some sleep,
She, sailed away to the southern hemisphere,
So pity me for I won't feel her tears upon my shoulder,
I fear as I grow older, the contours of her face will disappear from my mind,
Smoking Girlfriend
Sweethearts losing it maybe I can find it for her,
Sweethearts losing it maybe I can find it for her,
Sweethearts got a new colour for her hair,
Sweetheart click her fingers and soon I will be there.
Wiping dry the eyes of my smoking girlfriend,
Eyes get wet upon our smoking weekend,
We place our hope in the truth of what is god sent,
And all our virgin friends say that we're suited.
Wicker Girl
Sit down, shock is better taken with bent knees,
Shock is better taken with sugary tea,
What you said to me was rotten and nasty.
And if I can I'm going to build myself a wicker girl,
And fill it with used tissues,
When I burn it I will think of you.
This house is not a home now that you're gone,
And your hearts no longer welcome in my bed.
Blessed is something you'll always be,
Like catholic girls and Scottish malt whiskey,
What you do to me is no longer healthy.

Other Information

This single did a lot for us. It was made single of the week by Steve Lamacq on Radio 1, and then all of a sudden people other than our friends started to come to our shows. We recorded Breaking God's Heart up in Scotland and came back down to London and Too Pure told us in no uncertain times that it wasn't good enough. The guy who was in charge at Too Pure was called Nick West, and we never really got on. I went away from the meeting in a little strop, but ultimately I wrote this in a 'If you want a pop song I'll give you a pop song!' type of mood. We went back up to Scotland and recorded this, a faster version of 'Sweetness', remixed 'Eloping' and maybe something else I forget. Too Pure wanted it on the album but for reasons I'm unclear about now I was determined that it should be a single on its own.
They were right though and if not for Nick this would not have been a single and our whole story would have been different.
'Christ' may well be up there in the worst songs I've written. That's my girlfriend of the time Jen playing bass and singing, she used to be in a Riot Grrl band called Linus and once got thrown off the TV program, 'The Word'.

Smoking Girlfriend and Wicker Girl are hardly up there with my best either. Both are from what we could call 'the loft sessions'. If you like this sort of stuff you'd cream yourself at how much similar stuff remains unreleased. I believe that may be me rather than John playing bass on Wicker Girl.
