I Took Her Love for Granted, A Belly Full of Babies, To Hide a Little Thought

Released 11th October 1999 on CD and 7".

7" omits 'To Hide a Little Thought'.

I Took Her Love for Granted

Hope was propping me up when I met her,
As soon as I saw her I wanted to taste her lips,
So I did,
I was ecstatic for at least six weeks, oh,
Hope was placed in her hands when she caught me she asked me if it hurt,
I told her 'Christ it did.'
And it did,
When she left me every morning, oh,

I feel beautiful when she says I am beautiful,
But she is more beautiful.

I feel heavenly when she says I am heavenly,
But she is more heavenly.

Can't feel disappointed when her hips are that wide but I still feel lonely and screwed up inside,
And the taste of her tongue, it makes me wish I'd given up smoking,
She was a big, big girl she had big ideas,
Like how my heart should be free but I don't want it to be,
I want her, here beside me.

A Bellyful of Babies

The Cherubim and the Seraphim and the Thrones, they all sing,
They raise their wings to the glory of God.

The Dominions and the Powers, and the Virtues,
they all toss their weary heads for the sorrow of god.

The angels don't know why your skin is so white,
And Jesus don't know what I know tonight.

My seed will give you the warmest of glows,
And I want your belly full of babies, you know.

The Principalities, the Archangels and the Angels and you,
Bring God's love to my home, my poor broken home.

Oh the Priest and the Priestess show their weakness to the atheists,
They are all alone, serves them damn right, serves them damn right.

The children cry loudest in the atheist houses

Other Information

On the back of the cover of this record we announced that Jack had joined the band officially, even though he is not to be heard on this release. He did however appear in the video, once again shot by John Hardwick. He got us to run through a south London park in nylon body costumes. There was more than a little (understandable) grievance from parents in the park with their kiddies. I remember John, the director, making us watch the Magnificent Seven before the day to make us get in character.

'Belly Full of Babies' was recorded during 'The Fidelity Wars' sessions. To Hide a Little Thought was recorded for the BBC and is perhaps our most successful cover version, (its a Jonathon Richman song).

Around this time we went to Spain to play the legendary Bennicassim festival. In fact we elected to play a festival in Sweden on the same weekend. During the weekend we had to negotiate 6 flights, 2 boat rides, and numerous coach journeys. Hilariously we managed to miss 4 of the 6 flights including the first one out of Heathrow! Our show in Bennicassim turned out to be quite a legendary show, despite perhaps being one of the worst performance wise. Basically there was a free bar, and free, ahem, other stuff, and we ended up headlining the small stage due to the Manic Street Preachers or somebody not turning up. The highlight of the show was probably a stoned Ant trying to push his drum riser to a position where he could better see Jack. It was a truly odd show, when ever we go to Spain people tell us how it was their favourite gig, but I remember it and we really did play terribly.
