Since
January 2004 I've been slowly working on my first solo album, provisionally
titled 'Table for One'. The songs are kind of folky, guitar led tunes and a
deliberate return to the sound of some of my older records. Having spent a
few records dealing mostly with synths and drum machines it was good to come
back to guitars and drums afresh. I really want to take my time over my first
solo record and make it as good as it can possibly be, but in the meantime I
thought I'd release a few songs from the sessions on this EP, just to show
that I'm still alive. Here are a few notes about each song. Leave Your Shoes On - This is obviously a small nod to Randy Newman's 'Leave Your Hat On'. A great song completely misunderstood by Tom Jones recently. I just thought, 'Leave your hat on? That's not sexy'. In case any of you needed to know this late in the day I have a little kink for shoes. Just a little. The Light In Her Room - A brief re-union with Antony from Hefner who sang backing vocals and did some percussion on this. We did it the day after the brief Hefner reformation for the BBC John Peel tribute in December 2004. John and Jack should also hopefully feature on my album when finished. Crissy M - Crissy M is a real person, a quick google should find her for you, but don't do it on a work PC!! Little Democracies - Occasionally a song will take literally years to write. The title and basic lyric idea for this song has been around since Dead Media. Maybe I still haven't got it right, but at least it finished. Its a slightly political song about being a lefty under the Blair government , but please don't let that put you off.. A Different Kind of Me - This song and Leave your Shoes On, features banjo by Dave Watkins, the banjo player from bluegrass/indie heroes 'Hayman, Watkins, Trout and Lee'. Look out for yet another Hefner spin off band. |
