The Greedy Ugly People

I had her on the carpet twisting and squirming about,
Trying to guess what she needs,
Trying to guess what the fuss was about.
She had a conscience that surely did need pricking,
I was there for the picking as she would soon find out.
The Greedy Ugly People are not like us,
They don't feel the love that she and I would die without.
I had her on a chair in the middle of the living room,
And then we went to the bedroom, where we were making spoons.
When we went out she started clicking her heels,
She was sticking her chest out, cause she was starting to feel.
Love don't stop no wars, don't stop no cancer,
It stops my heart.

Everything's Falling Apart

She's out of her mind,
She's not like this all the time,
If she was I'd be lost,
But I want to be lost.
I love the feeling of losing control,
The city lights are letting me know,
That we are lost, oh but I want to be lost.
Everything's falling apart.
Everything's falling apart.
Since she got drunk, everything's falling apart.
Everything's taken its toll.
She lets me down, cause she doesn't know
That everything is falling apart.
I shouldn't have let her drive.
Cause she's lost the will to survive.
And who am I to stop her jumping red lights?
Everything she said tonight, she will forget,
But I will remind her we are lost,
We are lost.

Don't Give Up On Us Babe

Other Information

Everything is Falling Apart is a nice song. The b-sides, post Boxing Hefner, generally aren't quite as strong, but this one could sit on an album. It was written with the other City songs. Someone suggested to me that I'd never written a car song , and then all of a sudden I started to right loads, this, GLR, Jubilee. As for 'don't give up', well what can I say, it seemed like a good idea at the time. In contrast to what I said on the previous page this guitar solo is in fact Jack and not me.

I guess its one of those ideas that the band enjoys more than the audience (and that's a bad thing). It's also a joke which shows our age. The song was originally recorded by David Soul, famous for playing Hutch in 70's cop show, Starskey and Hutch. The thing is most Hefner fans are far too young to know that and so the joke is lost. We did play it live once or twice, we did it at the Crossing Broders festival in Holland where I got to play with my heros the Mountain Goats.

The support band for the City tour was Whistler, the poshest band in all of indie. Driving through Scotland once Ian from Whistler was heard to say 'I think I own a forest around here somewhere.' As soon as we met them we thought it would never work, but they actually ended up being our favourite band to tour with. Always up for another drink or something, not like Appliance. Nice lads but one orange juice and off to bed does not make for a good night out.

They are one of two bands that covered a Hefner song in their set whilst supporting us, 'The Greedy Ugly People'. The other band being The Violent Femmes who covered the Hymn for the Coffee. (Whistler did it a little better).

I guess we must have sensed that these were some of our best shows as we started to record them for the Kick , Snare album. Though in truth, we still somehow missed the best nights, which is probably how its supposed to be.
